Reviews Well just got back.
First things - Band: Black Cherry Crew still intact: Rowan Oliver, Davide Rossi, Angie Pollock, Charlie Jones ...and on form. Charlie's bass was PHATTER than usual, Angie's vocals were pleasantly up giving the vocals more depth, Davide played the whole gig in Shades and a purple jacket (pretty amazing when you thing how dark it was) and of course Alison's voice was amazing. Sound was spot on, but with an added extra 'rock'n'roll fuzz' which really lifted it for me.
I think the idea of a 'warm up' was crazy when you compare it to most bands, as I think this 'band' (definately not a bunch of session musicians) played better, together, tonight than the Black Cherry tour. Maybe it's becuase they are relaxed, or feel they are a real band this time, but they had a little more abandon and a few more rough edges than usual which really helped with the 'rock' sound. I saw them at Glasto last year (for the second time in a few months) and realised they were almost getting to too clinical.
Can't remember the set list but new songs were Lovely to see u, No. 1, Ride a White Horse, and Oh la la. They sounded much bettter than on the website feeds. Ride a white horse has an orgasmic ending (for those that were worried they weren't going to be any on Supernature). Although Lovely to see u still sounded to pop for me. The oldies actually sounded better than ever before. Lovely Head's 'vocorder break' seems to have come from the Staré Mêsto Mix it had such venon (still does it for me).
The only complaint was due to techinical problems Black Cherry didn't happen. Alison asked for requests and all the (Stupid) Sheffield audience could do was shout nonsense (i'm embrassed for my home county). So we got Oh la la again ?? Now I always thought every note was played on the Black Cherry tour , ie. no sequencing, so any song (from old albums ) would be possible, so i was very dissapointed.
Overall though i was really impressed. I'm still gonna hold out my judgement on the new songs till i've have had time to get to know them, but this band are 'on heat' at the mo and are always going to be worth the entrance fee.
BUT there is a down side to the whole 'pop' thing that i hope Alison is ready for. (From an audience point of view) when you get 'popular' in a 'pop' sense you get a different 'popular' crowd.
Now i'm going to sound like a music snob here and i'm sure poeple will have a go at me, but i'll just say i boogied more tham most and I made the odd comment to my friend in songs. But iI didn't, like many others...
1. Shout 'shit' all the way through 'The Shortwave Set' because of a 'narrow mind' having only one idea of what great music should be like. Open your mind, if not be polite.
2. Jump up and down (with the help of more than just shandy) and shout 'come on' continually in someones ear through most of the uptempo numbers while facing away form the stage. Then leave the near stage after pushing in with 2 songs to go.
3. The 50% of the audience who talked (full blown discussions) the whole way through Deer Stop. Felt Mountain tour was silent.
4. Spend the whole gig trying to take pictures with their mobile phones (which are shit any way!)
... sorry feel better know. I'll be alright after Sigur Ros gig in November.
