- Some thoughts on last night's gig, for what it's worth.
I first saw Goldfrapp a few years ago in Manchester at a small club called Planet K.
Obviously, last night was some way on from that. But it lost sooo much intimacy.
Fantastic to hear those phat, squelchy synths over a large system. But the Felt Mountain material, particularly the quieter tracks, seemed to get a little lost in the cavernous surround of the Apollo.
In its own perverse way, it's a shame. As deserved success pushes Goldfrapp on, the cost will be the lack of intimacy that happens at large venues. Oh, to see the Goldfrapp cabaret, in some deep, dark velvet-lined club. With an audience of one, me! But that's *my* fantasy, so keep your hands off!
As for the actual performance, it was excellent. Stunning stuff. And unbelievably faithful to the album ) (Plus, that dress Alison wore... rrrrrr!)
The stripper seemed a little superfluous - crass even - given that Alison carries so much erotic potency around with her on stage. (And Alison, you really don't want to be able to jiggle your tits quite like that... think of the effects of gravity! Your stripper should insure her breasts now, while they're still pointing upright.)
I wasn't disappointed with the set list (although I'd loved to have heard Brown Paper Bag). And the friend I went with who'd only briefly heard the albums was absolutely blown away by the gig.
So, keep up the good work. And plan that tour of small, intimate venues. Like the club I have in my front room ;o)

- hey there everybody, i was at the gig on tuesday too, thought it was pretty damn good! the felt mountain stuff sounded gorgeous(especially Pilots and Lovely Head, and the ending to Human was superb) but the Black Cherry material in particular was absolutely amazing. I always thought Crystalline Green was a very cool opener to the album but on tuesday it was absolutely incredible: really funky, absolutely hypnotic! Tiptoe was sensational too, it's probably my fave goldfrapp song at the mo, and it's the best example of how convincing and confident the direction of the second album is. I didn't even notice the stripper throughout most of train, i was just lookin at Alison to be honest! In response to another thread on this site, yes she is the sexiest woman in music at the mo, no doubt! Heard Yes Sir for the first time and WOW! Gotta love that theremin action, and the tune was pretty damn great too, can't wait to get it next monday on the twist single!
great to hear nearly all of black cherry played, although the absence of forever was a shocker, and i would have loved to have heard paper bag from felt mountain too. Still, Black Cherry (the song) was a beautiful finish, and the confetti was a very sweet touch too. I probably didn't love the gig as much as the time when i saw them at v2003 this year, but that's mainly cos that was the first time i'd seen them and i suppose it will always remain special to me because of that. Still, a lovely gig all in all, and having Prince and the Revolution's 'I would die 4 u' playing before they came on was a very cool move!
Anyway, i hope everybody who was there had a great night!
