Reviews - Good? Or just TOO damned good? That is the question. Natsha House anticipates the arrival of new album 'Black Cherry' in April with a bitter-sweet trip to Northampton's Roadmender.
It must be hard being responsible for one song which becomes the staple of every ?chill out? album on every coffee table in every land. With hit single ?Utopia? Goldfrapp achieved the kind of social resonance which is nothing short of remarkable for purveyors of abstract, operatic electronica. Follow-up ?Black Cherry?, due for release on April 28, will set Goldfrapp up at the centre of another cultural zeitgeist.
Immaculately dressed in the height of fashion, Alison Goldfrapp is a wonder from the sole of her silver wedges to the halo atop her frizzy hair. Disco influences rule her world and along with her bizarrely dressed band mates we all start to feel ashamed at our shabby, Tuesday-night turnout wishing we had donned stilettos and shades in preparation for sparkling synths and gut-wrenching bass lines.
Yes, she really can reach ear-piercing range when singing live, though she spends the rest of the time simpering and whispering into the microphone to create the lurid, enticing atmosphere of their spectacular new songs. Deep Honey, Tip Toe and Twist were deliciously dirty and dripping with glamour. And album title track Black Cherry reached the emotional intensity of Utopia but with an aggressive edge that should forever banish the word ?ambience? from descriptions of the band.
Brilliance all round then. Except that these perfectly executed songs served to impress, rather than excite me. Dozens of middle-aged men might want Alison Goldfrapp?s babies, but the ringleted diva seems to perform for herself alone. She only really seems to be enjoying herself by the second encore, and the otherworldly mystery which makes her so fascinating also makes her untouchable.
Contact between band and fans was minimal and slippery at best and there are no peaks and troughs to Goldfrapp?s emotional intensity. Just an interminable high, at once engaging, after a while just aloof, but undoubtedly excellent.

- The beautiful sounds of Goldfrapp will soon surround Northampton when the duo perform one of a limited number of shows.
Goldfrapp, returning to the music scene in April with new single and album, will play one of only three shows in the country to preview the new material.
The duo will play at The Roadmender, Northampton on Tuesday, 4th March and perform songs from their second album, Black Cherry.
Preceded by new single, Train on 14th April, the new album will be released on 28th March containing 10 brand new tracks.
Unlike the debut, Felt Mountain, Black Cherry was recorded in the busy and apparently darkened surroundings of a Bath studio.
Felt Mountain was notorious for its countryside feel captured from the surroundings. Black Cherry on the other hand draws on the cityscape. The rough, ready rush of busy streets and moving people.
The new album builds on the experiences of the last, while maintaining the experimental sounds, sonic booms and searing heights of melodic vocals.
Who are they?
Goldfrapp are the beautiful and exquisite voice of Alison Goldfrapp and accomplished musician Will Gregory.
Alison grew up moving between the countryside and suburbia. This proved to be the influence for her music.
Her voice just got better and better as she grew finally achieving the range and ability she now processes.
Oppositely, Will grew up around The Beatles and classical music. He learnt his trade and stage ability in bars around San Francisco.Noted for being able to produce beautiful music, one of his credits was producing the score for violent Brit flick, ID.
Goldfrapp?s appearance on the music scene has brought a dynamic, melodic and classical feel together with dance beats and breaks.
Be one of the first to catch the new material live in the county soon.

- Goldfrapp played a warm up gig at The Roadmender in Northampton on Tuesday 4th March. Chris Wimpress went along to review the night.
This is the first time I've been to see Goldfrapp and I have to say that their albums are no preparation for the live experience.
Unlike some of the statuesque synth act efforts, you really feel like you're watching a band perform, not just watching people play out a load of pre-recorded loops.
Alison wore her political views on her T-Shirt, as she worked her way across three effect mikes and a phallic-looking effects pole!
The best serving of the night was "Train" - a truly chunky, almost industrial new sound to the band which really got the crowd going.
Generally their new music is a long way from Felt Mountain, and the band seemed really pleased to be able to boogie on down to their new, more upbeat style.
I couldn't help drawing comparisons to seeing Portishead live, and this beatier side to Goldfrapp really brings out the Bristol trip-hop sound in them.
Like Portishead, there's never much chat with the crowd, but a 3-track encore made sure the audience knew their cheering had been appreciated.
