Reviews - One night this week Goldfrapp played the first gig of their UK tour to a half-empty Cambridge Junction. There was no support and until the first strains of music began nobody realised that the small group of people on stage were in fact the band that they had come to see.
Anyone who has listened to 'Felt Mountain', or whose attention has been caught by the band's music on TV adverts won't be surprised to hear words like haunting, plaintive or ethereal used to describe the band. In this respect, the live experience was everything that I could have hoped for and more. The blend of Alison Goldfrapp's phenomenal voice; soaring strings; and haunting, melodic keyboards were used to full effect to create a black and white soundscape reminiscent of the wintry forest shots on the inside cover of 'Felt Mountain'.
A third of the way into the set, however, it becomes clear that Goldfrapp have evolved. They have moved out of their rather chilly, haunting world into one of twisted funk and filthy basslines. What is shyly introduced as ?some new material? turns out to be the most marvellously funky, danceable and downright brilliant tunes that I have heard for a very long time. 'Tiptoe' boasts some seriously dirty bass which really makes you move. The next track is serious four-beat electro-stomp topped off with superbly sexy vocals from Ms Goldfrapp and even a bit of Theremin playing!
The group have taken the kind of 80s inspired sounds used recently by the likes of Ladytron and Felix da Housecat; given them new depth and produced a unique fusion of unearthly vocals and backing tracks that you just can't help but dance to. It was enough to move members of the crowd to shout marriage proposals and I'd marry her too given half a chance! The encore song was spectacular, rivalling Massive Attack's 'Teardrop' with its sheer beauty and slow trip-hop bassline.
Around two thirds of the gig was new material which might seem like a daunting prospect on the basis of the band's previous offerings. In actual fact, Goldfrapp managed to win the hearts of the entire audience and leave them shouting for more. If that's a taster of the new album then I, for one, can't wait until April 28th when 'Black Cherry' comes out. See them while you still can!
