Reviews -Goldfrapp @ Apollo
WITH her golden halo of hair and ethereal voice, Alison Goldfrapp is a modern day siren, calling you away from a world of bland and soulless pop.
Match her angelic, almost operatic, voice with a sexy backing track of irresistible beats and entrancing tunes, and being at one of her gigs becomes almost a conversion experience.
Sure, mixing 80s electro pop with glam rock and vintage cabaret sounds like a match made in hell. But, as Goldfrapp's much-acclaimed albums have already shown - and the live gig backs up - it is pure pop heaven.
Dominatrix
And the key to it all is Alison Goldfrapp herself. Much has been made of her refreshingly original look - part dominatrix, part vintage Hollywood star, part 70s disco diva, with Shirley Temple ringlets - but, up close, she is even more impressive.
Not only is she a one-woman lesson in style - not many could carry off an all-in-one zip-up jumpsuit with silver glitter platform heels - but she marries that to a totally mesmerising stage presence.
Songs that already sound great, such as Strict Machine or Number One, come to life with her dramatic flair. Even less infectious numbers, like current single Ride A White Horse, sparkle after a sprinkle of her magic glitter dust.
Top it all off with a disco glitter ball and four backing dancers in bikinis wearing wolves' heads and it's like the most bizarre cabaret night imaginable. Perfect.
