It is sometimes difficult to take Alison Goldfrapp seriously. No one, surely, can that sexy, that much of a huge star in waiting, that keen to drape herself in utterly perfect 1980s-styled electro without there being a strong odour of record-company manufacturing. But Supernature proves that Goldfrapp live by exceptions rather than rules. With crunchily exact beats, squelchy electronics and teasing vocals, there are echoes of turn-of-millennium Madonna and late-era Kylie, but where they have always struggles to convince over an entire record, Supernature is thrilling from beginning to end. That's thanks in part to Goldfrapp's early years. Being chill out, once, helps them here; the slower tracks are utterly delicious. Such moments of still serenity make the hugely exhuberant electro-glam that drives most of this record even more powerful - and yet there's still a wonkily off-centre feel here, too. Wonderful stuff. |
